Novolex is a leader in paper and plastic packaging for a variety of industries and markets involved in food manufacturing, food service, restaurants and hospitality, grocery and deli and more. Our customers expect our products not only meet their individual specifications but also meet stringent globally recognized standards required of all materials that come into contact with food.

With a vision of safe food for consumers everywhere, in 2000 food industry leaders created The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) to reduce food safety risks and build trust throughout the supply chain. GFSI drives continuous improvement in food safety management systems around the world. In total, 33 Novolex manufacturing locations that produce paper or plastic packaging for direct or indirect food contact end uses are certified to one of the two leading certification schemes.  Each are described below.

GFSI

The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) is a private organization, established in 2000 and managed by an international trade association, the Consumer Goods Forum. GFSI is focused on the continuous improvement of food safety management systems along all steps of the supply chain to ensure confidence in the delivery of safe food to consumers worldwide. GFSI provides a platform for collaboration between some of the world’s leading food safety experts from retailers, manufacturers and food service companies, food packaging providers, service providers associated with the food supply chain, international organizations, academia and government.

SQF

SQF stands for Safe Quality Food and is a global food safety program, recognized by GFSI. To achieve SQF certification, Novolex facilities complete extensive training; develop, document, and implement food safety and quality plans; and undergo a third-party audit. SQF certification provides assurance that the products sold by certified manufactures such as Novolex have passed rigorous international standards for food safety and quality.

There are three levels of certification for the SQF standard.  The first is SQF Food Safety Fundamentals for low risk products, incorporating fundamental food safety controls. The next standard to which most Novolex plants are certified is the SQF Food Safety Code for Manufacture of Food Packaging.  This SQF Food Safety Code is a certified HACCP food safety plan benchmarked by GFSI.  The third, SQF Quality Code, involves a comprehensive implementation of safety and quality management systems that incorporates the Food Safety Code for Manufacture of Food Packaging.

BRCGS

BRCGS – British Retail Consortium Global Standards – is a company founded in 1996 by retailers to harmonize food safety standards across the supply chain.  BRCGS’ Global Standard for Food Safety is a global market-leading Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) scheme developed by food industry experts from retailers, manufacturers and food service organizations to ensure it is rigorous and detailed, yet easy to comprehend.  The standard provides a framework to manage product safety, integrity, legality and quality, and the operational controls for these criteria in the food and food ingredient manufacturing, processing and packing industry.
