The high school business toured Wisconsin Film & Bag on Thursday, October 15th. According to Jeannie Jafolla, Regional Learning Manager for NWTC-Shawano Center, “We had 24 students from 3 local high schools (Gresham, Shawano and Bonduel) along with several Tech Education Instructors attend this tour.”
High school students enjoyed learning how Wisconsin Film & Bag reuses plastic and how plastic is melted and cooled into bags. Students had the opportunity to see the testing process for bags for quality assurance. The tour guides, current employees of Wisconsin Film & Bag explained what each machine does and were energetic and very informative according to the students. Students saw firsthand the importance of mathematics and physics in the manufacturing process and heard that people skills are one of the most important skills needed in business.
The students were surprised to learn that Wisconsin Film & Bag make 52 million pounds of bags each year and it all starts with little plastic beads. They also found it interesting to know that they are the only company that cleans dirty plastic.
October is Manufacturing Month in Wisconsin. The Manufacturing Alliance will pay for bus transportation for high schools to attend manufacturing tours in October. The next business tour for our local high school students will be held at Aarrowcast on Thursday, October 22nd from 11:30- 1:00 p.m.
