Hilex Tour: Richmond, Virginia

Hilex Tour: Richmond, Virginia

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote in a post that I planned to visit multiple Hilex facilities and highlight each in their own post. Well get ready folks, my first stop was at our facility in Richmond, Virginia!

While in Richmond, I saw a number of great things happing such as:

  • Our employees working hard at turning out all sorts of different plastic bags;
  • new plastic bags being created and tested;
  • used plastic bags being prepared for recycling

Take a look at the pictures below to get a peek at what I saw during my visit. While there, our employees were making these cool green-colored plastic bags. Curious how plastic bags are made? Check out my colleague Don Lundberg’s post for a more detailed explanation.  Don’t forget to check back in the upcoming weeks to find out our next featured facility.

Fun fact: Plastic bags that contain darker pigments actually have more recycled content! Does your bag say “Contains at least 25% recycled content?” Ours do!

Extruding plastic film: Here is where the film is sent through rollers in order to get it to lay flat. These rolls of film can weigh several thousands of pounds! The various tubes you see in the back right actually help move all of our plastic resin throughout the facility using a pneumatic system.
