How big is the plastic bag industry in the United States?

The plastic bag industry is an American industry providing tens of thousands of jobs across the country. Hilex alone has plastic bag manufacturing and recycling facilities in 11 facilities in eight different states, with our largest facility in North Vernon, Indiana. Hilex employees are some of the hardest working individuals, dedicated to their jobs and enthusiastic about what they do. Since the more than 1,200 employees at Hilex are so vital to our day-to-day operations, I wanted to take a moment to focus on the latest number of jobs in the United States that are supported by the plastic bag industry as a whole.

The Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) recently assessed the employee numbers in the plastic bag manufacturing and recycling industry and found there are more than 30,000 people employed by the industry in the United States. Across the country, these 30,000 jobs support 30,000 families, which the United States Census 2010 found the average household to include 2.6 people. Assuming that all 30,000 employees in the industry support a family, about 78,000 people are directly supported by the plastic bag industry, which is nearly twice the population of Olympia – the capital of Washington State! That’s a lot of people!

At Hilex we’re proud to be a part of an industry that supports so many Americans that work hard each day, not only at their industry jobs, but also to support their local communities, churches, schools, politics and more.
